Review - 1up (2012)

Nintendo got more creative with its next two releases, Space Launcher and Sheriff. Space Launcher challenged the player to send a rocket into a docking bay at the top of the screen, dodging mines and crashing into UFOs on the way up. Sheriff put you in the leather boots of a cowboy surrounded by trigger-happy bandits. A dial let you aim your revolver while giving you the freedom to dance around your enemies' bullets, paving the way for Geometry Wars and other dual-stick shooters.
Sheriff put Nintendo on the right track as a game developer. The game wasn't well known in the United States, but its play mechanics were clever enough for Nintendo to revisit it as an homage in WarioWare: Mega Microgames! for the Game Boy Advance.

Trivia:

1) "Sheriff" distinctly features independent dual-joystick controls, which is a configuration unusual for arcade games and nonexistent in consoles at the time. One joystick moves the character and one aims and fires, each in eight separate directions, allowing the sheriff to walk in one direction while shooting in another. The movement joystick is set with a considerable time delay before moving.
2) Processor 2.016 Mhz.
3) Made by Nintendo, released in October 1979.
4) The Sheriff and the bandits characters, appear as trophy in the game "Super Smash Bros. Melee"  and "Super Smash Bros." for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.
5) A slightly redesigned version of 'Sheriff' is included as an unlockable extra on Nintendo's Game Boy Advance game "WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgames!". In this version, Wario is the "dashing hero" instead of the cowboy from the arcade game; the gameplay and graphics are otherwise basically the same. "Sheriff" also serves as the basis for one of 9-Volt's microgames during normal play.

6) Game is an unofficial sequel to Gun Fight.

7) Shigeru Miyamoto would later popularize this concept in a Donkey Kong, including the damsel in distress plot and the use of cutscenes (Sheriff has proto cutscenes on the top of the screen) to progress the game's simple plot.

8) Other early game with music is color arcade game Yosaku (1979).

9) Emulated in: MAME
